We don’t know about you, but we’re starting to plan all the trips we’re going to take this summer. All road trips are better when the weather is nicer, whether it be trips to the beach, mountains, or even trips a few towns over to grandma’s house.

While it’s important for your road trip to be full of fun, it’s also important that it’s safe for you and your family. Here at ADT, we’re experts in all things safe. Before your big trip, review the summer car safety kit checklist below to make sure you are ready for your safe, yet memorable road trip ahead.

Car Safety Kit

  • Water bottles and snacks for family and pets
  • Air compressor and tire sealant
  • Fully functional spare tire
  • Foam sealant
  • First aid kit with sunscreen and bug spray
  • Battery-powered jumper cables
  • Solar-powered charger
  • Flashlight and roadside lantern
  • Duct tape, fuses and recovery gear
  • Window breaking tool, pocket knife and shovel
  • Rain poncho
  • ADT’s personal safety app SoSecure

What goes into a good first aid kit?

When it comes to protecting you and your car, you should be the first priority. A well-stocked first aid kit should be able to help to treat any minor injury, from a headache to a sprained ankle. While you’re planning your own first aid kit, consider the following list as a starting point:

  • Bandages and gauze
  • Antibiotic ointment
  • Antiseptic wipes
  • Aspirin
  • Sunscreen and bug spray
  • Emergency blanket
  • Instant cold compress
  • Hydrocortisone ointment
  • Tweezers, scissors
  • Nonlatex gloves
  • CPR pocket mask
  • Any personal medications

Traveling with pets?

Who doesn’t want to take their favorite little furry friend on a trip with them? Road trips with pets can be so fun, but they can also go south quickly. It is important to take extra prep steps when road-tripping with a pet. See below for our car safety recs for pets:

  • Buckle them in with a pet harness.
  • Bring their bed along so they have a comfy spot to rest.
  • Pack a pet travel water bottle.
  • Pack treats and food for them to enjoy along the way.
  • Make regular stops for your pet to go to the bathroom and stretch their legs. Don’t forget the potty bags to clean up after them!
  • Place a chew toy near your pet to keep them entertained.
  • If your pet is prone to car sickness, obtain anti-nausea medicine for them from their vet.

Traveling with a group?

Have a jam-packed car for your road trip? Traveling with friends or family is definitely fun, but can be distracting to the driver.

As the driver, be sure to communicate with your passengers the ways in which you do not wish to be distracted during your drive. As a passenger, please respect the driver's wishes and act responsibly to avoid a dangerous situation.

Traveling by yourself?

There’s something quite peaceful about taking a nice long drive by yourself. Plus, not having to share the aux cord with a passenger! Go ahead, sing along as loud as you want, but personal safety is very important when traveling alone.

SoSecure by ADT is a free mobile app that can connect you with help in an emergency. To get started, just input some basic information and link the contacts that you want to be notified if you’re ever in danger.

SoSecure is easy to use discreetly if needed. ADT agents will talk on the phone if you are in an uncomfortable situation where you don’t want to feel alone and alert the authorities of your location immediately in case of an emergency.

With SoSecure Premium, we even offer roadside assistance and crash detection. ADT can always be with you for your ultimate peace of mind. No one has more ways to help protect what matters most.

Snacks? Check. Playlist? Check. Car safety kit? Double check. We’re ready to hit the road!
