As you shop for a home security camera, you likely have a lot of questions that need answers. We’ve narrowed down the top six to help you on your journey to better home security and peace of mind.
1. How do security cameras work?
Popular security cameras have built-in motion sensors to detect heated objects and any activity such as people, pets and cars. Once the camera’s sensor is triggered, you’ll receive a mobile alert to watch the live activity from your mobile device using an app. The sensor will also trigger the camera to automatically record the footage to playback later.
2. What’s the difference between wired and wireless security camera
Wired security cameras are often professionally hard-wired to your home for power and data transmission to your security system and other devices. On the other hand, wireless cameras connect to Wi-Fi to transmit data. They can be placed anywhere throughout the home using a wall outlet or batteries.
3. How do security cameras store video?
Some security cameras require local storage using a secure digital (SD) card inserted into the camera to store recorded videos. Once the card is full, you’ll need to find a secure place to store videos digitally - usually a laptop or hard drive. But, if you locally store your footage there’s a greater risk of your camera footage falling into the wrong hands, unlike encrypted cloud storage.
Home security companies offer cloud storage to encrypt and store camera footage securely without needing an SD card. All data is protected by your provider’s cloud server and requires a secure log-in to playback footage. Home security companies offer a number of hours of cloud storage before overriding older footage with new camera recordings. You’ll be able to download, save and share any footage from your camera’s web portal.
Some cloud storage plans are additional charges while other providers include cloud storage in your home security plan. Storage also depends on the number of cameras included in your plan.
4. How do security cameras record?
There are two ways security cameras record footage for you to review later. Motion-triggered security cameras only record activity once the sensor is alerted. The camera will then record clips of the activity for you to review. Other cameras have continuous video recording (CVR) to record your home’s activity 24/7 and store all footage for you to review later.
5.How can you control your security camera?
If you’d like to take a peek at your home while you’re away, use your camera’s mobile app to see live footage anytime, from virtually anywhere. You’ll also be able to control settings, update firmware and share access from one app or web portal.
6. How long do security cameras record?
Unless you have CVR, the amount of time footage is recorded depends on your camera. Newer ADT cameras record and store footage clips in 30-second increments.
