Families hide security cameras for many reasons. Some cameras are hidden to prevent thieves from meddling with them. Others disguise their cameras to capture suspicious activity throughout their home that they wouldn’t see otherwise. Regardless of the reason, knowing how to hide a security camera in plain sight requires careful planning and placement.

Where to hide security cameras

There are a few ways to set-up a security camera without guests noticing and feeling uncomfortable. Here’s where to hide security cameras without too much work:

  • House objects and decor such as plants, books, and frames. Cameras are also often hidden in lights and other home equipment.

  • Add a camera cover to blend into your home. Consider less noticeable covers such as a camouflage one.

  • Stuff your camera in a stuffed animal to keep an eye on kids without being obvious.

  • Mount your camera on a high ceiling out of clear sight.

How to disguise a camera

When planning your indoor security camera placement make sure wires, sensors and other camera equipment aren’t visible. It may be best to look for a security camera already designed to blend into your home for less work. Start by looking for cameras with covers that blend into your wall paint or those that are small enough to fit in the perfect area of your home.

If you’re hiding your camera outdoors, make sure it’s in an area that’s weather-resistant and mounted securely. It’s best to avoid tree limbs, or areas low enough for lurking thieves to tamper with. Consider hiding the camera facing outdoors behind glass or mounting it securely to your home’s siding.

Wherever you decide to hide your home security cameras, make sure it’s still able to capture a wide view of your home and there’s sufficient lighting.

Security camera recording laws

It’s important to remember that cameras should not be used to make visitors feel uncomfortable. Before you decide where to put ADT cameras or other recording home security make sure you review media recording laws in your state as there may be legal consequences. In some states, hiding security cameras may require consent and may result in hefty penalties if you record without asking.
