Security cameras have different fields of view and focal lengths, depending on the camera type. Many CCTV security and doorbell cameras feature a wide-angle lens, which offers a larger view of the surrounding area.
Understanding the differences between wide-angle and traditional lenses is important to help you figure out the right camera for your needs.
What is the focal length and field of view?
Your camera's focal length is measured (in millimeters) by the space between the camera's lens and the image sensor. Different focal lengths correspond to different views, and lens or sensor size contributes to the size of the FOV.
For example, if you have a longer lens or small sensors, you'll get a smaller FOV. And a shorter lens or bigger sensors creates a broader view. This smaller FOV corresponds to a more "zoomed in" look, which is perfect for seeing the larger picture of an area with a narrower field of view.
The minimum and maximum focal lengths are listed for you when using a zoom lens. A lens that says it's 70 to 200mm means that the max magnification is 200mm.
A camera's field of view (FOV) is what you see through your security camera or what you might see on a computer screen or phone. You measure the FOV in different degrees. The lenses range from a super telephoto lens to a super wide (or fisheye) lens.
A large FOV can give you a larger picture of the surrounding area and is preferable for security cameras because it allows you to see more.
What is the field of view at 10x zoom?
An optical zoom happens when you zoom into (or enlarge) something. The more you zoom into something, the smaller its FOV becomes.
For example, 10x zoom enlarges an image 10 times more than the normal focal length and telefocal length.
Why is field of view important?
Field of view is important because it determines what you’ll see through your camera's lens and screen. In addition, you'll also want to consider whether your security camera has magnification.
What else should you look for in a security camera, other than the field of view?
Other than the FOV, there are plenty of other features you should look for in a security camera. Here are a few other considerations you should have when shopping around for both indoor and outdoor cameras.
- Image quality or resolution determines how clear the video is. It may be difficult to see what your video is capturing if it's too blurry or pixelated.
- Smart home automation can combine your camera with other smart devices like smart lights, sensors or speakers to create an integrated system that helps protect your home. Look for smart features like 2-way audio, customizable alerts and real-time viewing.
- Cloud storage can save space on your device while keeping your video safer and easier to access. You can check out footage on the cloud if you have an internet connection.
- The power source determines if your security camera runs off wires, batteries or a combination of both. Wire-free designs are ideal for apartments or homes, while a wired option might be better if you own your home.
- Weatherproofing is essential for outdoor cameras, especially if you live somewhere with inclement weather.
- DIY or professional installation comes into play if you want to set up a camera system or have it professionally installed. ADT professionals know exactly where to install each camera, so it offers the best view based on your home’s unique layout.
