Carbon Monoxide Detectors & First Responders Save Kansas City Family

Nancy Carol and Eileen from ADT

It Might Look Like A Burglar Alarm. But it’s Much Much More.
It’s not just humans who always go above and beyond. Sometimes it’s the technology.

Around 8:15 pm retired art teacher Nancy Carol* was in her Kansas City home when the basement carbon monoxide detector activated. “I figured it was the smoke alarm. I went downstairs to check if there was any reason for it to be going off --  I couldn’t see any smoke anywhere, so I came back upstairs, turned it off and waited for the monitoring company to tell me what’s wrong.”

“Good evening, this is Eileen with ADT security. I’m calling to notify of a residential carbon monoxide alarm.”

When Eileen asked if anyone was feeling ill, Nancy’s daughter stated that her mother had a headache all day. After hearing that information Eileen told everyone to get outside, then phoned 911 to report that Nancy may need help.

“A little nausea, a little headache and that was enough for the EMT people to say, we’re taking you to the hospital,” said Carol. “There they kept me on oxygen and kept me overnight. But I have to say as scary as that alarm sounds, I’m glad I had the system set up.”

"I’m so incredibly grateful I had the system and the CO Detector"

“The story might have been very, very different.”

“If you think about it, it was 8:15 at night,” said one of firefighters on the scene. “Nancy could have just gone to sleep; if that happened this could have been a tragic event we’re talking about. The problem we found was a baking sheet in the bottom of the stove with no vents. It was blocking gas flow, causing the carbon monoxide build-up. But things that went right in this case, the system was monitored, it triggered a call to our dispatch center which automatically sent us.”

“I’m so incredibly grateful I had the system and the CO Detector.  This is a bill I will never regret paying — it saved our lives,” said Carol.

To celebrate the successful outcome, there will be a LifeSaver Event bringing everyone together for the first time. Nancy will meet Eileen. Also present will be service tech Chris Wilburn who repaired Nancy’s alarm panel after the incident. He will be receiving a LifeSaver Award as well as representatives of Safe Haven Security, who installed Nancy’s system.  Lastly, Chief Daughtery from Gladstone Fire Department will receive $5,000 from ADT and share details about the dangers of Carbon Monoxide.

This is a story of everyone playing their part for a safe outcome. The ADT rep and installers. The call agent. The firefighters and homeowners. And even the little box -- the ADT connected CO Detector, that is always, always on call.
