ADT Helps Save Kansas Family from Lethal Levels of Carbon Monoxide in their Home

A scare from the “silent killer” happened the night of June 8 inside the Cimarron, KS home of ADT Customers Wrenn and Greg Slaven*. Visiting from Wisconsin were grandsons Maverick and Greyson.

“We were unusually tired that night and I was even feeling light-headed,” said Wrenn. “What we didn’t know was that carbon monoxide was seeping from a faulty water heater in the basement and permeating the house.”

The family was sleeping so soundly that they did not hear the beeping of the home’s ADT carbon monoxide detector nor the ringing of several calls coming from multiple ADT Customer Care Centers.

Slaven family was reunited with rescuers who saved them from carbon monoxide in their home.

Jalisa Ash and Colleen McKibben from the Knoxville and Rochester Centers handled the response. Both followed company policy requiring first responders to be notified first before calling the premise. So, within minutes, the Cimarron Volunteer Fire Department was headed to the Slaven home. Upon arrival, they banged on the door several times and were about ready to force an entry, when Greg opened it.

“When we went in with our portable air monitor, it indicated lethal levels of carbon monoxide in the home,” said Fire Chief Rex Beemer.

Without monitored protection, the family would have likely gone to bed and not woken up.To celebrate the successful outcome, a LifeSaver event was held at the Wichita Customer Care Center on August 3 with over a hundred team members watching as the Slaven’s reunited with the ADT employees and first responders who helped save them. Emotions were running high as Jalisa met the Slavens for the first time.

Hosted by ADT CMO Jamie Haenggi, LifeSavers were presented to Jalisa and Colleen. Additionally, Tom Haxton and Gus Morales, who installed and serviced the Slaven system were awarded LifeSavers. And Linda Corbett, from the Field Support Center in Aurora, CO was recognized with a LifeSaver for helping set up the Slaven’s system when it was installed in 2012.

ADT contributed $5,000 to Cimarron firefighters who will use the funds to buy three more hand-held monitors to detect dangerous gases in homes and businesses.

“We are grateful beyond words to God, ADT and the firefighters,” said Wrenn.

Speaking at the event was ADT customer Jerry Malone whose Wichita home caught fire after being struck by lightning in 2013. Jerry believes her life was saved due to a phone call from ADT which woke her up.

“I’m a lifelong Wichita resident and been a loyal ADT customer for 20 years,” said Jerry. “I can’t imagine living anywhere else nor having any company, other than ADT, provide my protection.”

Several ADT leaders attended the Aug. 3 LifeSaver including Lynn Costlow, Sr. Vice President of Customer Care; Shari Wilson, Sr. Director of Wichita Customer Care; John Mendoza, Area General Manager, Jennifer Moore, Team Manager, Knoxville Customer Care and Maria Sabala-Davis, Team Manager, Field Support Center, Aurora, Colorado.
