Industry: Retail & RFID Solution: Retail Solutions
Tesco is at the forefront of the global retail industry. It is one of the leading international retailers in the world and the UK’s number one domestic supermarket. The company has built its success on offering customers great choice and excellent value.
With over 1200 stores throughout the UK, a well managed supply chain is essential. Tesco has a variety of store formats, such as Extra, Superstore, Metro and Express. Supply chain efficiency is critical in ensuring that each store receives the correct products at the right time.
The challenge Competition in the retail market continues to intensify. Offering a customer what they want, when they want it, helps to build a stronger loyalty base.
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is seen as an important technological development within the global retail industry. The challenge is to simplify the supply chain and reduce out of stocks, offering the customer greater availability. RFID is one of the ways in which this can be achieved.
Tesco’s needs Tesco continues to offer its customers more choice through its variety of store formats and Tesco.com, the world’s biggest on-line supermarket.
Tesco tasked ADT with developing a RFID solution, capable of delivering benefits for customers by increasing the efficiency of the supply chain.
Receiving, counting and transporting the right quantity of each product, at the right time, to the right store is a challenge. Tesco needed a solution that would offer its customers greater product availability and would enable them to monitor the delivery of high value goods through the supply chain.
The solution needed to be implemented quickly and demonstrate benefits for the Tesco business and its customers.
The solution
The last few months have seen ADT begin to install 4,000 readers and 16,000 antennae throughout Tesco stores and warehouses in the UK. RFID has the potential to reduce traditional supply chain problems such as late deliveries, out-of-stock items and poor customer service.
The ADT/Tesco partnership is Europe’s largest ever RFID deal. Today, the dock doors and merchandise receipt points at Tesco stores and distribution centres are being fitted with RFID technology. Tesco can now monitor the delivery of high value goods as they move through the supply chain, ensuring improved availability for customers.
This initiative also supports the goals of EPCglobal, the industry body responsible for developing global standards in RFID throughout the retail supply chain.
