The sensor does not control your heating or cooling system on its own. A compatible, installed Nest thermostat is required.

Put your Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen) in a room where you spend a lot of time.
Place it on a flat surface, like a shelf, or mount it on a wall about chest-high using the screw included in the box.
It should be installed a maximum of 50 feet (15 m) of your compatible Nest thermostat, so that the sensor and thermostat can communicate wirelessly.

When Wi-Fi is unavailable, the battery-powered Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen) keeps working. It tracks room temperatures and sends data directly to your compatible Nest thermostat using a Bluetooth connection. However, if your home or HVAC system loses power, heating and cooling may be interrupted until power is restored.
