Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the Save Power Day Incentive Plus program?

A: Southern California Edison (SCE) company's new Edison SmartConnect® digital meter provides a suite of new tools, incentives and services that will provide you with additional ways to reduce your electricity costs. Save Power Day Incentive Plus is a new program enabled by Edison SmartConnect and is available to eligible SCE residential customers.

Q: How does Save Power Day Incentive Plus work?

A: SCE plans to call twelve to fifteen Save Power Days each year. If you are enrolled, SCE will notify you via email, voice, or text, as well as through your new device, the day before a Save Power Day takes place. Save Power Days will typically be called during the summer when electricity demand is high. If you reduce your electric usage during a Save Power Day between the hours of 2 PM to 6 PM, you can earn bill credits based on the amount of reduction you achieve. It's that simple. The more energy you reduce, the more incentives you can earn.

Q: How much can I earn?

A: Under the Save Power Day Incentive Plus program, you will receive a $1.25 bill credit from SCE for each kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity you reduce during a Save Power Day, as compared with your average usage during similar time periods. SCE refers to this average as your "Customer Specific Reference Level" or CSRL. To determine your CSRL, SCE averages your energy usage for the three highest usage days (from the previous five non-holiday, non-Save Power Day weekdays) for the same 2 PM to 6 PM time period. This average is referred to as your CSRL. The CSRL value is recalculated for each subsequent Save Power Day. You earn bill credits for all kWh you reduce below the CSRL value for each Save Power Day.

Q: When will Save Power Days be called?

A: SCE will make the decision as to when Save Power Days will be called. There will be twelve to fifteen Save Power Days each year. SCE will usually call a Save Power Day during the summer months, and always for a fixed-time duration from the hours of 2 PM to 6 PM. Save Power Days will only be called on weekdays, Monday through Friday. Weekends and holidays are excluded.

Q: By how much should I reduce my usage?

A: It is completely up to you! Customers with central air conditioning may have the greatest ability to save because air conditioning typically accounts for a large amount of energy use during this time period. The key to saving under the Save Power Day Incentive is to reduce your electric usage from 2 PM to 6 PM during a Save Power Day. Some ways to save might include:

  • Turning your air conditioner off or raising the thermostat setting (to 78 degrees or higher)
  • Planning to run your pool pump earlier or much later in the day
  • Washing clothes before 2 PM or after 6 PM
  • Running the dishwasher before 2 PM or after 6 PM
  • Turning off all unnecessary lights and appliances especially big screen TVs and computers
