The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) increases the regulatory requirements for companies that manufacture, supply, process, pack or hold food products. By requiring food facilities to evaluate hazards in their operations, implement and monitor effective measures to prevent contamination, and have a plan in place to take corrective actions when needed, the FSMA shifts the focus of the FDA from response to prevention.

As the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) moves forward with the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS), the program continues to evolve. This white paper describes the ongoing CFATS compliance process (which is a combination of technical, procedural, and personnel security) and also provides insight regarding how the process has been adjusted to allow for an additional step, the Pre-Authorization Inspection (PAI). Recommendations are relevant to Site Security Plans (SSPs) for all tier levels and should also be considered for a facility's initial SSP submission.

Working on your Site Security Plan (SSP)? The next stage in the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standard (CFATS) compliance process requires covered facilities to submit a Site Security Plan (SSP). Given the importance of the SSP, covered facilities should address a number of factors while they complete this step in the CFATS regulation.

Item-level RFID represents the missing link to optimal in-store intelligence. When used in conjunction with complementary technologies - including POS (Point-of-Sale) retail automation (barcode, payment terminals, and so on), EAS (Electronic Article Surveillance), inventory management automation, and people counting - it has proven to enable enhanced strategic decision-making, which facilitates significant improvements to a number of key business operations, ultimately resulting in better margins.

This white paper represents a collaborative effort by ADT/Tyco Fire & Security, Alien, Impinj, Intel, Symbol and Xterprise for the purposes of providing educational information on UHF RFID technology to the market, and to examine the suitability of UHF RFID for item level applications in the pharmaceutical industry. As manufacturers and developers of leading UHF RFID products and solutions, these companies determined through interactions with customers - and at the suggestion of customers - that there was a market need for accurate information on the UHF Generation 2 protocol, from a technical and strategic aspect.

After years of tentative economies and tight budgets, companies in today's business climate are struggling more than ever to maintain, and preferably increase, profitability. But the laws of business - and nature, for that matter - suggest that in order to see increases in one area, there may have to be decreases in others. In the case of profitability, those corresponding decreases may come from operating, marketing and staffing expenses. Unfortunately, some companies even choose to cut services, an option many industries have found leads to high failure rates, unacceptable customer attrition rates and fierce competition.

We frequently hear how things changed after 9/11 and nowhere did they change more than in the security industry. One of the important lessons we learned from the 19 terrorists who attacked us that morning was that we no longer had to just worry about bombs being brought onto our shores. Instead, the nation saw how a common airliner could be turned into a massive, deadly explosive. It taught us what we already had an inkling of, when in April 1995, homegrown terrorists blew up the Oklahoma City federal building with a nitrogen-based (from fertilizer) blast.

Introduction
Networked video is today's generation in video surveillance and can provide numerous advantages over analog and digital video recorder based systems. Networked video systems (NVS) are developed to utilize Internet Protocol (IP) enabled devices such as computers, network switches, IP cameras. Internet Protocols are a collection of standardized and globally accepted protocols for information transmission through a network. IP networks are safe and have been in use with other applications since 1974. A firewall, VPN (virtual private network) and password protection restrict access to data being stored and transferred. In addition, video camera manufacturers have encryption and IP filtering built into their cameras to help provide an added layer of protection.

Retail is without a doubt one of the most challenging environments for security and safety. Large numbers of people, employees and merchandise with continuous motion - often both day and night -- make for a lot of moving pieces to track and protect. It is difficult in even the best of times, but it takes on a whole new meaning in an economic downturn when people and employees are under greater stress and crime tends to naturally increase.

As a part of its significant growth pattern, the Bank completed scores of acquisitions over the past twenty years. Often, merger and acquisition activities create challenges for bank operation managers tasked with making acquired security systems work together effectively. Such was the case with the Bank, when an audit of its security operations determined that multiple facility alarm technologies, vendors and monitoring methods were no longer meeting the Bank's longer-term objectives. After weighing their options, the Bank turned to ADT to help implement a multi-phase program of new security standards, including an integrated alarm network, outsourced central station and important new alarm reporting services.

Introduction
The Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standard (CFATS) is intended to establish a baseline level of security for facilities considered to pose high risk to the general population in the event of a terrorist attack. Many are under the mistaken impression that CFATS is a chemical facility regulation. It is, in fact, a regulation that covers facilities that use chemicals. This is a broader interpretation and more accurately defines the jurisdiction of the rule. CFATS defines security requirements for facilities that use, manufacture, store or handle specific quantities of approximately 322 chemicals that DHS has identified as being extremely dangerous.
